Mission: To share information on the causes for and prevention of Coral Bleaching and acidification of reefs
Founder: Nicole sorochan, Victoria
Description: Coral has a critical partnership with certain algae that absorb sunlight and convert it to energy needed to feed the complex array of life found in a reef ecosystem. The loss of these algae, a common consequence of pollution or climate change, leaves a reef "bleached" and unable to produce energy from sunlight.
Details: Coral bleaching is a vivid sign of corals responding to stress which can be induced by any of:

* increased (most commonly) or reduced water temperatures

* increased solar irradiance (photosynthetically active radiation and ultraviolet band light)

* changes in water chemistry (in particular acidification)

* starvation caused by a decline in zooplankton.

* increased sedimentation (can be contributed to silt runoff)

* pathogen infections

* changes in salinity

* wind

* low tide air exposure
