Pedal Power

Mission: A space to share stories, ideas and designs relating to pedal powered devices.
Founder: gringo ben, London
Description: The bicycle is without a doubt one of the most important inventions of all time but pedal power can do more provide human transportation. People around the world have been modifying bikes into electricity generators, juicers, grinding disks, washing machines and even bandsaws.
Details: A typical cyclist can generate a constant 50 or 60 watts while pedalling and maintain this for several hours. It would take perhaps 20 hours to generate just 1 kwh so it can certainly not compete economically with grid supplied electric however there are applications where pedal power makes a lot of sense. For example: Half an hour pedalling in the afternoon could provide lighting for the whole evening using high efficiency white led bulbs and so a pedal generators could enable an off grid village to operate a school in the evening without needing a conventional generator and expensive fuel. Pedal power is also a very useful educational tool, teaching people the value of energy and allowing them to quantify it in understandable human terms.
