UVIC Common Energy

Mission: A province-wide (BC) campaign to move students and institutions beyond climate-neutral
Founder: Nicole sorochan, Victoria
Summary: Common Energy is a network of university, community, and regional partners working to create solutions to the problems of climate change. Launched by students working in and with the University of Victoria Sustainability Project, Common Energy now has hubs at UVic and UBC. We have worked with many other groups to develop the Campus Climate Network to integrate BC's universities and colleges. These institutions can be catalysts for the social transformations required to turn the threat of climate change into an opportunity to protect the diversity of life, and create prosperous societies.

We want to move UVic beyond climate-neutral. Moving beyond climate-neutral means that a person or institution does more to solve the problems of climate change than it does to cause them. This emphasizes both the need to reduce our contributions to the problem, and the opportunity we have to create solutions. What would it look like for a university to move beyond climate-neutral? We've developed a Guide to Move UVic Beyond Climate-Neutral to provide some initial answers to that question.

goBEYOND is a province-wide campaign to move students and institutions beyond climate-neutral. goBEYOND is a Project that Common Energy has worked on collaboratively with the Sierra Youth Coalition, UBC Sustainability Office, and groups across the provice from the Campus Climate Network. UVic is one of three campuses kicking it off this September, with the rest of the province launching in January.
Details:
UVIC Common Energy needs a budget in order to advertise green initiatives to the student body; to sponsor lectures and information campaigns on topics to do with sustainable energy; to host club functions and events; and especially, as honourariums for students who put in a disproportionate amount of time and energy towards organizing our projects.

We need funds to advance the challenge program by which each student or household accepts the challenge to become energy efficient and carbon neutral. Furthermore, we would like to organize collaborative planning processes on campus that would increase our outreach to the community of Victoria.
